1.   The word has a feminine marker on: ة   شجرة   سيارة

2.   The word is for a female woman:  أم       أخت    مريم   ليلى

3.   Just learn the exceptions to the rule:

a.   شمس

b.   سماء

c.   الأرض

d.   سبيل

e.   حرب

f.     جهنم

g.   نفس

h.   دار

 i.    نار
paired body parts:
يد
عين
قدم
رجل
أذن 

The feminine word would take هي هذه تلك she/it, this, that in the feminine. It would also be described with a feminine adjective.
